Man kills friend over a woman in Ogun

43-year-old Adebisi Akinrinmola pictured above, has been arrested by men of the Ogun state police command for allegedly killing his friend, 36 year old Ademola Asimiyu, over a lady they were both interested in. According to police report, the incident occurred on Sunday 19 February, 2017 at Ajebo Village in Ijebu-Igbo area of Ogun State.

When interrogated by the police, Adebisi said the deceased had accused him of snatching his girlfriend from him and asked him to leave the lady alone. Last Sunday, the deceased accosted him and the said lady on their way to his farm and a heated argument ensued.

In the process, the deceased brought out his cutlass to attack him. In defence, Adebisi said he brought out his dane gun and shot at the deceased who died instantly.

Former NNPC boss, Andrew Yakubu, asks court to order EFCC to return his $9.8m, £74,000 seized from his Kaduna home

Former NNPC boss, Andrew Yakubu, has asked the Federal High Court in Kano to issue an order compelling the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission EFCC to return the $9.8 million and £74,000 recently seized from one of his homes in Kaduna state.

In a suit filed by his counsel, Ahmed Raji, SAN, Yakubu asked the court to set aside the ordered granting FG ownership of the money discovered at his home on February 3rd.


According to Vanguard, Yakubu argued that the court lacked the jurisdiction to grant FG ownership of his money.

The court paper in part reads “No aspect of the perceived offence in respect of which the Order of February 13, 2017 was made, was committed within the Kano judicial division of this Honourable Court”. “By Section 28 of the EFCC Act, only the commission, i.e. the EFCC has the vires to seek an order for the interim forfeiture of property under the Act. The power of this Honourable Court to make interim forfeiture order(s) pursuant to sections 28 & 29 of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission Act, 2004 (herein after referred to a “EFCC Act”) is applicable ONLY to alleged offences charged under the EFCC Act and not to offences cognizable under any other law.

FG to spend funds recovered from Diezani, Yakubu to feed poor Nigerians

The Federal Government is set to invest some of the recently recovered funds on its social intervention programmes.

A top government official told newsmen on Saturday that the $9m recovered from a former Group Managing Director of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, Andrew Yakubu and the $153m forfeited by a former Minister of Petroleum Resources, Diezani Alison-Madueke, would be immediately used to fund the welfare scheme for the poor.

The official, who wished to remain anonymous, said the money would be used in paying the N30,000 monthly stipend to beneficiaries of the N-Power scheme, the job creation programme of the President Muhammadu Buhari administration; as well as the school feeding programme.

He said, “The National Economic Forum has been meeting and we are looking at the idea of investing the recovered funds on the social intervention programme which will gulp hundreds of billions of naira.”

The Federal Government is also on a mission to recover at least N399bn and $6.62bn in cash and assets from the high profile cases being prosecuted across the country.

Release Nnamdi Kanu, IPOB lawyer begs FG

A lawyer to members of the Indigenous People of Biafra, Mr. Adoga Inalegwu, has called on the Federal Government to immediately release the IPOB leader, Mr. Nnamdi Kanu, so he can begin to talk to his people on the need for peace.

Speaking shortly after a bail application for 45 suspected members of IPOB hit a brick wall at the Magistrate Court in Port Harcourt, Rivers State on Friday, Inalegwu suggested that the poor handling of the agitation for Biafra could worsen the situation.

The lawyer explained that the continued detention of the IPOB leader was not a solution to the agitation for Biafra.

He argued that freeing Kanu would enable him to speak with his people to embrace dialogue with the Federal Government.

Inalegwu said, “I have written to the Federal Government for a dialogue to end this matter before it gets out of hand. We looked on and the Niger Delta crisis got out of hand. I think it is time for the Federal Government to call on the leadership of Biafra to sit down and discuss the matter.

Pastor sentenced to 20 years in jail for defiling a 13-year-old girl

A Ghanaian pastor from Domeabra in the Ga West Municipal Assembly has been sentenced to 20 years in prison with hard labour for defiling a 13-year-old girl. The pastor identified as Vincent Kete pleaded guilty to defiling the daughter of his friend of 25 years.
At a recent court hearing, prosecutor Kofi Atimbiri said the accused called the victim to his room on Tuesday, February 7, 2017. and forcibly had sexual intercourse with her.

The accused and the victim’s father, as friends, lived in a single room in a mission house of their church. The pastor told an Accra Circuit Court presided over by Magistrate Abena Oppong Adjin-Doku that his action was the work of the devil and does not know what came over him.

9-month-old baby boy whose genital was cut off by his stepmother, undergoes first corrective surgery in Niger State

Back in June 2016, LIB reported about a woman named Bara'atu who cut off the genital of her step son - named Buhari Muhammad out of 'jealousy' in Minna, Niger State. She used a sharp knife to cut off his penis and the cry of the baby attracted neighbours, who rushed to the place and found him in a pool of blood.
She made an attempt to abscond but was overpowered by people around and handed over to the police, while the baby was taken to the IBB Specialist Hospital in Minna. She was arraigned on a one count of attempted homicide before a Chief Magistrate’s Court in Minna and remanded in prison.

Farmers, herdsmen clash in Niger, 10 dead

About 10 persons were reportedly killed in clashes between suspected Fulani herdsmen and farmers in two communities in Niger State.

It was learnt that the clashes happened at Bokuta village, Bosso Local Government Area, and Tungan Mallam village in the Paikoro LGA.


While six were killed in the Bokuta clash, four died in the Tungan Mallam melee.

A resident of Bokuta, who identified himself only as Isiaq, said trouble started in the community on Thursday, July 7, when some herdsmen invaded a farm with their cattle and destroyed its crop.

He said the farm owner engaged the herdsmen in a scuffle, during which one of the invaders was killed while another one was injured.

Man arrested with human head in Bauchi

A young man, who claimed to have gone to a cemetery to exhume the corpse of his son, was last week arrested by police detectives in Bauchi with the head of a male child wrapped in a cloth.

The 25-year-old man, Maikudi Mohammed, according to the Bauchi State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Haruna Mohammed, was arrested in Misau Local Government Area of the state.


The state police image-maker noted that preliminary investigation revealed that the suspect, who hails from Galambi village in Bauchi Local Government, conspired with his accomplice, one Damina Mohammed, aged 26.

The suspects, according to DSP Mohammed, went to a graveyard in Galambi village to exhume the head of a male child corpse to sell to a customer, now at large. The PPRO said that the suspect confessed that the child was his son, who died and was buried but that he later went back to the graveyard at night with his accomplice to exhume it.

The police spokesman added that the case was under investigation after which the suspects would be charged to court for prosecution.

The ruling party, All Progressives Congress says the anti-corruption war of the Muhammadu Buhari’s government is neither selective nor partisan.


John Odigie-Oyegun, chairman of the APC, reiterated this claim in an interview with The Punch, where he noted that Peoples Democratic Party chieftains are being investigated because most of them received funds from Sambo Dasuki, former national security adviser.

He said that when the former NSA was sharing money “from his ATM machine”, he didn’t extend an invitation to members of the opposition party.

Dasuki, who has been in custody since 2015, is being investigated by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) over the alleged diversion of funds meant to fight the Boko Haram insurgency.

“Prosecution depends on evidence. Once there is evidence, if anyone has evidence, let him provide it. This generalised rumour is not basis for serious action of that type. And in any case, there are a few APC leaders who are being called to question. It is not as one sided as it seems and it is not something to be apologetic for”, Oyegun said.

I’m not wanted by EFCC, I’m ready to defend myself - Maina

Abdulrasheed Maina, former chairman of Pension Reform Task Team (PRTT), has denied being on the wanted list of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).


In November 2015, EFCC had declared him wanted over his alleged role in the N2bn pensions biometric contracts scam, and listed him on its website as one of its wanted persons.

Three months earlier, Maina was charged alongside three others before a federal high court on a 24-count bordering on procurement fraud and obtaining money under false pretences.

But responding to ‘EFCC’s 7 most wanted fugitives’ — a report published by TheCable on Friday, Maina said the anti-graft agency never listed him in the charges but “merely mentioned” his name.

“I am not wanted by the EFCC or any anti-graft agency in the country. Secondly, and important too,  I was never at any time joined in any suit with the ex-head of service, Mr. Steve Oronsaye, who I have much respect for,” he said.

EFCC secures court order to detain Omisore

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission(EFCC) yesterday secured a warrant from a court to detain a former Deputy Governor of Osun State, Otunba Iyiola Omisore in connection with the ongoing investigation of N1.310billion illegally allocated to him and three companies by the Office of the National Security Adviser(ONSA).

The cash was part of the N4.745billion slush funds allegedly disbursed by ONSA.

The N1.310billion was remitted as follows: Fimex Gilt Limited(N160m)-8/8/2014in UBA; Metropolitan Consortium(N350m)—9/7/14 in First Bank; Sawanara(N300m)—1/8/14 in First Bank and Metropolitan Consortium(N350m)-1/8/14 in First Bank.

His other accomplices include Governor Ayodele Fayose and ex-Minister of Defence, Mr. Musiliu Obanikoro, who has gone on self-exile in the United States.

According to a source in EFCC, the depth of the ongoing probe demanded that Omisore should be in custody for a while.

NDLEA plots to abduct me, Kashamu cries out

The Senator representing Ogun East Senatorial District in the National Assembly, Prince Buruji Kashamu, has raised the alarm over a plot by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) to abduct him as well as plans by some individuals to assassinate him.


 In a statement issued yesterday in Lagos, Kashamu alleged that the plot to abduct him was being coordinated by the NDLEA and some powerful individuals in the agency.


Kashamu said that the plot was to either have him abducted or attacked on the streets or at a social function. He wondered why anyone would want to usurp legitimate authorities and resort to such crude tactics and self-help in a democratic Nigeria.

“I do not know what I have done to them that they want to do as if Nigeria is a Banana Republic. If anyone thinks he has a case against me, he should approach the courts and allow the rule of law to prevail. “I urge the masses and Nigerians in general to help me beseech the Almighty Allah who has been my help and shield to continue to protect and guide me from all manners of evil machinations.

Obama suspends European trip for Dallas, following deadly attack that left five police dead

Barack Obama will cut short a trip to Europe and travel to Dallas next week in the wake of the deadly ambush in the city that left five police dead, the White House said Friday.

 “The president has accepted an invitation from Dallas Mayor Mike Rawlings to travel to Dallas early next week,” spokesman Josh Earnest said in a statement, adding that Obama would return to the United States Sunday night — one day ahead of schedule.


Obama, who was in Warsaw this week attending a NATO summit, weighed in on the attacks from the Polish capital, calling the episode “vicious, calculated and despicable.” Micah Johnson, the 25-year-old black Army veteran who carried out the sniper-style attack, killed five police while wounding seven more, as well as injuring two civilians.

Suicide bombers hit Borno Mosque, Killing 6

The Nigerian Army said yesterday that two suicide bombers attacked the town of Dambua in Borno state, with one of them gaining entry into a mosque and killing six persons and himself.

Attempts by the other suicide bomber to detonate his explosive in a bigger mosque was however foiled by troops . A statement signed by Col Sani Usman, Acting Director, Army Public Relations said “At the early hours of Friday (yesterday), precisely at about 5.15am, two Boko Haram suicide bombers attacked Damboa. “The first suicide bomber targeted Damboa Central Mosque but due to stringent security measures, he could not gain entry.

Reasons why we are no longer talking with Niger Delta Avengers – FG

The Federal Government explained yesterday why it has refused to enter into dialogue with the Niger Delta Avengers who has continuously bombed pipelines in the region even as the militants vowed not to beg government for negotiation.

The Federal Government gave the explanation a day after the Avengers blew up three more trunk lines in Bayelsa and Rivers. Meanwhile, residents of over 75 riverine communities Delta state have cried out over the pollution of their environment and environment by the activities of the Avengers and other militant groups.

Giving reason why the Federal Government was not holding talks with the Niger Delta Avengers on how to put an end to the bombing of pipelines, Vice President, Professor Yemi Osinbajo said that they are not freedom fighters but economic warriors who are fighting for their own private pockets.

Siblings attacked by suspected cultists in Makurdi, Benue State

Three children of a pastor were on Thursday, June 23 attacked by suspected cultists near Benue State University second campus in Makurdi.

The victims, who are children of NKST Church pastor, Reverend Akpen Leva reportedly confronted a group of suspected cult boys who had earlier snatched the phone of the youngest sibling and the cultists attacked them with machetes.

The siblings sustained various degrees of injury and were rushed to the Benue State University Teaching Hospital were they are currently receiving treatment.

Five dead in Mogadishu hotel attack claimed by Shabaab

At least five people were killed Saturday in an attack on Naasa Hablood hotel in southern Mogadishu, the Somalian capital, that was quickly claimed by Al-Qaeda-affiliated Shabaab militants.
The assault was led by a suicide bomber who drove a car filled with explosives, the jihadists said in an online statement.
The hotel is often used by politicians and members of the Somali diaspora who visit the city.

The attack started at 4:30 pm (1330 GMT) with a powerful blast from the car, followed by two other explosions and then heavy gunfire.
At night time, there was still sporadic gunfire coming from the Naasa Hablood hotel in Mogadishu, after it was stormed by the militants, witnesses said.

"What we know is that there were at least five victims, including three security guards, and that six others were injured," police official Ibrahim Mohamed said.

"The security forces have managed to enter into the hotel and are in the process of restoring security," Mohamed added.

Texas mom killed by police after she shoots dead her own two daughters

A 42 year old Houston woman, Christy Sheats  fatally shot her two daughters, 22 year old Taylor Sheats and 17 year old Madison Sheats, when a family dispute moved from their home in a quiet subdivision in suburban Katy, Texas onto the street.

The Police were called around 5pm on Friday but by the time they got there, Christy Sheats was found standing near the bodies of her two daughters still holding the gun. Madison was pronounced dead on the scene, while Taylor was airlifted to Texas Medical Center in Houston in critical condition on Friday, where she later died on Saturday morning.


When the Police responded to the crime scene, they asked the mother several times to drop her weapon but she refused and ended up getting killed by the responding police officer.

The husband and father was home at the time, but he was not injured. He was later taken to a hospital because he was distraught.

'It was a family argument that turned into a shooting. But we're still trying to put the pieces together,' Sheriff Nehls told the Houston Chronicle. 'Right now, all we can do is try to pray for the father and the husband so he can try to work through this.'

LESSON FOR NIGERIA: How Corrupt Leaders Are Punished In Other Countries

The light sentence handed to a director in the Police Pensions Office, Mr. John Yusuf, by a Federal High Court in Abuja is still the subject of what is gradually turning out to be a nation-wide debate on the moral substance of the ruling.
Yusuf was convicted for defrauding the Office of the sum of N27.2bn alongside six others, an offence punishable under Section 309 of the Penal Code Act, Cap 532, Laws of the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, Nigeria, 2007. He was subsequently sentenced to a two-year jail term.

Apparently worried that Yusuf, like a few other public office holders convicted for graft before him, had managed to negotiate this light sentence through the doctrine of plea bargain, many Nigerians have wondered if the judiciary is actually deaf to outcries against corruption and the present campaign to rid the country of the evil.

The decision of the presiding judge, Justice Abubakar Talba, in not responding positively to the plea of the counsel to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, Mr. Rotimi Jacobs, to sentence Yusuf as stipulated by law, has further weakened public confidence in the ability of the judiciary to uphold the principles of justice and fairness.

Kwankwaso secures release of 170 prison inmates in Kano

Senator Rabi’u Kwankwaso on Friday secured the release of 170 inmates from various prisons in Kano after paying their fines.

The fines were paid by Kwankwasiyya Development Foundation, an NGO, seeking to promote good governance and transparency in the country.

Speaking shortly after the release of the inmates in Kano on Friday, the former commissioner of Justice in the state, Alhaji Maliki Kuliya, said the gesture was in the spirit of the month of Ramadan.
He said the foundation had also secured release of another 41 inmates in Zamfara, Kaduna and Kebbi states after paying their fines.

According to him, the foundation had also concluded arrangements to pay the fines of another 107 inmates in Katsina and Jigawa states.
