My salary as lecturer was more than RCCG’s income — Adeboye

The Overseer of The Redeemed Christian Church of God, RCCG, Pastor Enoch Adejare Adeboye, who presides over a global church with members in about 198 nations of the world, at the weekend, described his early years as the General Overseer of the mission as turbulent, saying the church’s total income then was about half of his salary as university lecturer.

Ministering during a three-day special programme to end the church’s 40-day fasting and prayer period at the Redemption Camp, Kilometre 46, Lagos Ibadan Expressway, Pastor Adeboye shocked the worshippers when he declared that the church’s total income when he took over its leadership was less than his pay.

His words: “When God called me into full time ministry, I must tell you the truth, I was afraid because things were rough. I knew poverty when I was young but I became a university teacher with the belief that my days of poverty were gone.

Leadership tussle over Assemblies of God church leaves 20 injured, houses burnt

The leadership tussle over the stool of the General Superintendent of the Assemblies of God Church in Nigeria, between Professor Paul Emeka and Dr. Chidi, exploded into violence in one of its branches in Saminaka, Lere Local Government Area, Kaduna State, about 140 kilometres east of Kaduna metropolis.

The fight left 20 members with injuries and two homes of resident pastors burnt. A source from the Assemblies of God Church (Jerusalem), Saminaka, told revealed in Kaduna that the fight started from 8a.m. and lasted till 2p.m. Sunday, which was later confirmed by Kaduna State Police Command.

It could be recalled that on September 15, 2015, Governor Nasir el-Rufai had ordered the closure of the church including the Theological Seminary of Northern Nigeria, Saminaka, Shalom Comprehensive College, AGC Evangelist Hospital, Saminaka, saying it was to avoid a possible breakdown of law and order, as the two factions squabbled.

According to the source, a minority faction of the church sneaked into the premises on Saturday evening and slept overnight. The source said: “We came to worship around 8a.m. Not knowing that the other faction had prepared for war. We came into the premises and secured the gates. “As soon as we had settled for the Church proceedings, about 20 members of the other faction appeared.

Farmers, herdsmen clash in Niger, 10 dead

About 10 persons were reportedly killed in clashes between suspected Fulani herdsmen and farmers in two communities in Niger State.

It was learnt that the clashes happened at Bokuta village, Bosso Local Government Area, and Tungan Mallam village in the Paikoro LGA.


While six were killed in the Bokuta clash, four died in the Tungan Mallam melee.

A resident of Bokuta, who identified himself only as Isiaq, said trouble started in the community on Thursday, July 7, when some herdsmen invaded a farm with their cattle and destroyed its crop.

He said the farm owner engaged the herdsmen in a scuffle, during which one of the invaders was killed while another one was injured.

The Game and Snoop Dogg Lead Peaceful March to LAPD Headquarters

Police promotions now strictly on merit - IG

Acting Inspector General of Police (IGP), Alhaji Ibrahim Kpotu Idris, has promised to look into the cases of officers and men who are due for promotion.

The IGP added that promotion in the force would now be based strictly on merit.

He gave the assurance when he paid a courtesy visit on the Niger State Governor, Alhaji Abubakar Sani Bello at his official residence in Minna yesterday.

Expressing his determination to give the personnel of the force and the citizenry a sense of dignity, the IGP said he will run a fair and just Police Force that will ensure that there will be no miscarriage of justice against its members or anyone in the country.

He said: “I have said that the Police Force will operate by the rule of law. So if anyone is due to be promoted, we will see to it that they are promoted based on merits.

“If there is any miscarriage of justice, I can assure you that anything that violates the law and every irregularity that goes against the operations of the Nigeria Police Force are going to be addressed.”

Buhari gets new chief security officer

President Muhammadu Buhari Thursday in Abuja charged public officers entrusted with certain responsibilities to live up to their duties and justify the confidence reposed in them as this was the only way Nigeria can get out of the current hardships facing the nation.

President Buhari said this while decorating two of the newly promoted officers of the Nigerian Police Force deployed to his office with their new ranks.

Abdulkarim Dauda and Kayode Sikiru Akande, both promoted from the position of Assistant Commissioner of Police to Deputy Commissioner of Police, serve as the Chief Personal Security Officer to the President and the Officer in Charge of Presidential Movement respectively.

President Buhari congratulated the officers and urged them to justify their new ranks by increasing their commitment to the service of the nation.

5 confirmed dead, 3 critically wounded in land dispute crisis between two communities in Cross River and Ebony States

Five people have died while three are seriously wounded following renewed land dispute crisis between neighbouring Adadama in Abi LGA of Cross River State and Amagu in Nko LGA of Ebonyi state.

According to CrossRiverWatch, four persons from Abi were killed when some Adadama women went to their farms to harvest cassava on Tuesday, June 21.

"The women were chased and driven from their farms by the Amagu youths, when they reported their ordeal, the youths of Adadama went on rescue mission and a fracas ensued that led to the death of four Adadama youths while four persons were rushed to UCTH with bullet wounds and one, Mr. Ikor Anali, later died at UCTH on Wednesday. While it was not yet possible to get information from anyone in Ebonyi state, some of the Adadama people on the ground allege that, though policemen from Nko police station who were on ground to maintain peace were still trying to intervene, before they knew the Amagu youths commenced attack on us."

Police officers must declare their assets - Acting I.G, Mr Ibrahim Idris

All officers from the rank of Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) to Inspector-General of Police, will henceforth declare their assets, the Acting Inspector-General of Police, Mr Ibrahim Idris, has declared.

Idris made the statement on Thursday in Abuja when he paid a courtesy visit to the Minister of Interior, Lt.-Gen. Abdulrahman Dambazau (rtd). He said that the directive was in line with Section 13 cap 15 Code of Conduct Act.

 “Every police officer from the rank of Assistant Superintendent of Police to Inspector-General who are commission officers must declare their assets,“Idris said.

He added that the directive would guide the conduct of police officers in carrying out their duties. The police boss promised that under his administration, the integrity of the force would be further enhanced.

 “I assure you sir, that we will raise the integrity of the Nigeria Police Force to be more accountable to the people,“he said.

Bayelsa Hospital drags 121 Unclaimed Corpses to Court

A mild drama played out at the Federal High Court in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State Wednesday, when the court clerk read out a case between the Federal Medical Centre, Ovom in Yenagoa and 121 unclaimed corpses.


Lawyers and those who were in the courtroom were still in shock when Justice Ajiya Nganjiwa sought to douse the jolted occupants of the courtroom.

“Now everybody is afraid because they have mentioned corpses,” the judge joked.

But the lawyer to FMC, Bayelsa, Mr. K. Clement, prayed the court to grant his 14-paragraph application requesting that the hospital should be given the go-ahead to give the unclaimed corpses a mass burial.

We are not planning to overthrow Buhari – Nigerian Army

The Nigerian Army has denied teaming up with any group to overthrow the government of President Muhammadu Buhari.

The Army was reacting to the recent claim by a group, under the aegis of Joint Niger Delta Liberation Force (JNDLF) that some officers of the Nigerian Army approached them for support to kick Buhari out of power.

Recall that Presdient Buhari was ousted from power through a palace coup in 1985.

The army, while describing the group as faceless, called on the general public to disregard the claim in its entirety.

A statement by Colonel Sani Kukasheka Usman, Acting Director Army Public Relations said the military was working closely with the current government in its fight against terrorism in the country.

State Governors have bastardized our Local Government system - Obasanjo

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo yesterday rued that the 774 Local Government Areas(LGAs) across the country have been rendered “impotent”and almost “bastardized,” following the massive encroachment into their affairs by the state governors.

Obasanjo said the glaring injustices and overbearing influence of the governors which they hand down routinely to the LGAs are such that they cannot tolerate it should the Federal Government elect to treat them the same way.


The ex – President made this known when a 60 – member delegation of the National Union of Local Government Employees(NULGE) visited him at his residence on Presidential Hilltop Estate, Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital.

'Governing Nigeria is a very huge task' - President Buhari cries out

President Mohammadu Buhari has cried out, saying that leading the people of Nigeria was a huge task. In a manner that suggested that the weight of the present challenges facing the Nigerian State was telling on his leadership, the president urged his Ministers and indeed, Nigerians to pray for the country.

He however said that instilling patriotic spirit in the people for the benefit of especially posterity was a task that must be done.


He noted the month of Ramadan as a special time when God listened and answered prayers of the faithful.

The President spoke Tuesday night while breaking fast with members of the Federal Executive Council (FEC) who were mainly his Ministers at the presidential banquet hall of the Aso Villa, Abuja.

He said: “It strengthens our resolve to build our country to make it stronger and to make sure that the incoming generations are sufficiently motivated to be patriotic. “It is no news that we are the biggest country in Africa, we are the economy engine of Africa, which are true by the way. “But, we must always be patriotic in our dealings with others.

19-yr-old girl commits suicide over quarrel with boyfriend

Tragedy struck at Alhaji Ede Avenue in Igando area of Lagos, after a 19-year-old lady allegedly committed suicide following a quarrel with her lover.

 The deceased, Uche Obiora, was said to have visited her lover’s home over the weekend. There were, however, different accounts as to how the tragedy struck.

A version of the account said a quarrel ensued between them, over suspicion by Obiora that her boyfriend, Ernest Ihaza, was having an affair with another lady. Another version stated that during the visit, Ihaza announced his intention to discontinue with the relationship.

During the verbal confrontation between them, Ihaza was said to have stormed out of his apartment. However on arrival, he reportedly met Obiora writhing in pains on the floor holding on to her stomach. Obiora, who later reported the case at the Igando Police Division, disclosed that Obiora drank poison.

No life pension, immunity for Saraki, Dogara-SERAP

Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has strongly condemned as “self-serving and despicable the demand by some senators on Saturday for immunity and life pension for presiding officers of the National Assembly after their tenure in office.”

SERAP’s statement followed the proposals by the senators at a two-day retreat on Constitution Review organised by the Senate Ad Hoc Committee on Constitution Review in Lagos on Saturday. Among others, the proposals want presiding officers, such as President of the Senate, Deputy President of Senate, Speaker of the House of Representatives and Deputy Speaker of House of Representatives to enjoy life pension and immunity, since the executive and judiciary are enjoying it.

But SERAP in a statement today by its executive director Adetokunbo Mumuni said, “The retreat by the senators and representative was titled ‘Towards Ensuring Governance Accountability in Nigerian federalism’ but their grand strategy is the calculated use of legislative powers to alter the 1999 constitution in their own favour so that they can enjoy life benefits at the expense of millions of economically and socially disadvantaged Nigerians who voted them into office.”

Elegushi beach shutdown over death of Unilag students

In response to the drowning of two students of the University of Lagos (UNILAG) at the Elegushi Private Beach, the Elegushi Royal Family has shut down the beach in honour of the victims and to allow investigation of the incident.

The victims, Adesola Ogunmefun and Funmilayo Odusina, drowned while swimming in the ocean during a party organised in celebration of their friend’s birthday penultimate Sunday. The victims allegedly submerged in strong tides.

The Elegushi family closed down the beach ahead of the visit by the state government’s investigation team. The family said the measure was taken to improve the safety and management standards at the beach.

In a press conference held yesterday in the Elegushi Palace in Lekki, the family’s spokesperson and Asiwaju of Ikate Land, Prince Olanrewaju Elegushi, condoled with the bereaved family, regretting the “unfortunate incident”.

The royal family refuted the claim that the victims died in the beach, noting that the deceased were rescued alive but died on the way to the hospital. Prince Elegushi said the safety facilities at the beach were up to the standards, adding that necessary safety measures, including the provision of lifeguards and ambulances, were provided at the beach in line with best practice.
