2016 World’s Top 1,000 Universities List: Nigerian universities fail to make the cut

The Centre for World University Rankings (CWUR) has just released its 2016 ranking of universities across the world.

Sadly, no university in Nigeria made the list of the world’s top 1,000.

The ranking, released on Monday, placed Harvard University, United States, on top as the best higher institution in the world, followed by Stanford University, also in the U.S.



Another school in the U.S, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, is the third best in the world.
Two universities in the United Kingdom, University of Cambridge and the University of Oxford, are ranked fourth and fifth respectively.

Five other American universities are also ranked within the top 10 – they are Columbia University, sixth position; University of California, Berkley, seventh; University of Chicago, eighth; Princeton University, ninth; and Yale University, 10th.

Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) shut down indefinitely

The Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Osun State was shut down Wednesday following workers protest over appointment of the institution’s new vice chancellor, Prof. Ayobami Salami.

Workers of the OAU under the aegis of Non Academic Staff of Universities (NASU) and Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (SSANU) till Wednesday intensified their protest over non-payment of allowances and alleged imposition of a Vice-Chancellor despite the ‘no work’, ‘no pay’ threat by the university’s authorities.

The workers, who claimed that the new Vice Chancellor’s appointment was illegal, vowed to stop him from resuming office Thursday.

The authorities shut down the university less than two days to the expiration of the tenure of the outgoing vice chancellor, Prof. Bamitale Omole.

In a public announcement, monitored on Ife-based radio station, the university Registrar, Dotun Awoyemi, explained that the closure was to ensure the safety of students and staff.

Basic education is free for all school children- Lagos warns teachers

The Lagos State Government has warned public schoolteachers against collecting fees from pupils, saying basic education is free for all schoolchildren.

It added that any official, who acted on the contrary, would be appropriately dealt with.

The Executive Chairman of the Lagos State Universal Basic Education Board, Dr. Ganiyu Sopeyin, gave the warning while announcing the establishment of three new public primary schools in the state, a statement on Sunday said.

Sopeyin said the addition was in line with the government’s vision to make qualitative and quantitative basic education available in all parts of the state.

The new schools are Local Government Primary School, Oke-Ishagun/Ikola, in the Alimosho Local Govermnment Area; Community Primary School, Abule-Eko, Ikorodu LGA; and Tsangaya Primary School, Orofun, Ibeju-Lekki LGA.

The statement said the schools were approved for listing in a memo dated June 13, 2016, adding that the total number of primary schools across the 20 LGAs in the state now stood at 1,010.

Dr Muhammed Idiagbon, A former Head of English Department, University of Ilorin, who was accused of sexually harassing a female student of the school, says his ordeal is a set-up by his envious colleagues.


Idiagbon, who said this in a text message to Naijaloaded.com promised to give a detailed account of what happened in a press conference.

He said, “The allegation is harassment and not rape. It is a conspiracy; a set-up by my colleagues over my rise to stardom. I will address the media at the appropriate time.”

Efforts to get additional comments proved abortive, as his telephone line indicated that it had been switched off.

Meanwhile, the management of the university has promised that justice will be done in the case.

NYSC denies reduction in corps members allowee

The management of NYSC has released a statement denying claims that it is reducing the allowance of youth corp members by 25%.

Governor Suspends All State Varsity Staff

Taraba state governor, Darius Ishaku has ordered the authority of Taraba State University to suspend all staff the state employed between May 29, 2015 to date.


This was contained in a letter with a reference number MOE/S/34/169  signed by the state Commissioner for Education who was represented by Bala Fwadu.

The letter which was addressed on Monday to the registrar, Taraba State University, stated that the directive was with immediate effect.

Part of the content of the letter read thus, “His Excellency, the Executive Governor Arch. Darius Dickson Ishaku, has directed that all employment of staff in the University from 29th May, 2015 to date have been suspended.’’

16yr old boy brutally raped inside school by one of his classmates

A 16-year-old boy was allegedly brutally raped inside Atlanta's B.E.S.T. Academy, according to a report by Fox 5, Atlanta. The B.E.S.T. Academy is a school for gifted young men in Atlanta, Georgia.

According to the 16-year-old victim's parents, who spoke to the media, their son was raped by another male student during the school day. The boy's mum told reporters that that her son was using the bathroom when he was "ambushed" by a predator.


"The child burst into the stall and asked him to perform oral sex on him. My son told him ‘No, I am not gay’ and he was not going to do that. The child then proceeded to hit him in his face, nose and choke him. Then he entered my son and told my son if you tell anyone, I will kill you," the child’s mother said as she sobbed.

Wike Increases Allowee for Rivers State Corpers, after Okonta's Death

Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers state has announced that Samuel Okonta, a youth corper who was killed during the recent election rerun in the state will be immortalized by the state.

Speaking at the Rivers State National Youth Service Corps, NYSC, Headquarters in Port Harcourt on Wednesday, Governor Wike also announced an increment in the monthly allowance of corps members serving outside Port Harcourt from N10, 000 to N15000.

He also increased the state monthly allowance of corps members serving in Port Harcourt from N5000 to N10000.

YABATECH expels six final year students

The Academic Board of the Yaba College of Technology has expelled six final year students for allegedly presenting fake or altered National Diploma (ND) and National Certificate of Education (NCE) results for admission.


The expulsion notice is contained in a circular signed by Mrs Taiwo Obadimu, the Deputy Registrar of the college, which was made available to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos on Wednesday.

According to the circular, the authorities of the institution considered the report on verification of the affected students’ results and found them culpable.

“Their expulsion was approved, having found the students guilty for presenting fake/altered ND/NCE results, as their conduct violated the college’s rules and regulations.

“The students are advised to hand over all college property, including student identity cards in their possession, to the heads of their department, the Polytechnic Librarian and the Dean of Students’ Affairs, with immediate effect,’’ the circular stated.
