Nigeria's Okagbare won silver At Shanghai Diamond League 100m

Nigeria’s Blessing Okagbare on Saturday continued her impressive run in the IAAF Diamond League as she finished second in the Women’s 100m event with an impressive 11.00 seconds.

Okagbare finished behind London Olympic champion, Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce, of Jamaica who also outran her arch-rival Carmelita Jeter again as she won the women’s 100m sprint with a new world leading time of 10.93 seconds to claim the title.

Okagbare had also in the first leg of the Diamond League in Doha jumped a new personal best distance of 7.14m as she gets into shape for the World Championships in Russia later this year.

Nigeria has failed to win any medal at the World Championships since 1999 but Okagbare’s blistering form gives some hope that Nigeria may be back on the podium again if she remains consistent and refuses to fizzle out when the expectation is highest.

While the heroics of Okagbare is been heralded, it was however not the same good news for the other Nigerian on parade in Shanghai as Ajoke Odumosu finished 7th in the 400m hurdles Women’s event. Odumosu ran a time of 55.94secs in the race won by Zuzana Hejnova of the Czech Republic in a time of 53.79 seconds.
