Nurses
in Delta State University Teaching Hospital, DELSUTH, will, today,
commence an indefinite strike action to protest the state government’s
alleged refusal to pay two months salary arrears owed to 60 of its
staff since 2009.
Delta State Chapter of National
Association of Nigeria Nurses and Midwives, NANNM, in a statement by its
Secretary, Mr. Olabode Akinfenwa, said that the association’s position,
directing its members in DELSUTH to embark on an indefinite strike from
today, was because of the the government’s alleged lip service towards
the salary arrears for 60 nurses after their employment in 2009, which
the association insisted was a breach of agreement.
The
statement alleged that the nurses were asked to buy uniforms provided
by management of the hospital, which it noted, was an aberration and
against the state employment policy for nurses and midwives, adding
that the hospital cannot compel NANNM members to obey such a policy
