Trump says Democrat Hillary Clinton should exit the presidential race if she takes the same approach.
He made his comments in a statement issued in response to the attack on a Florida gay nightclub, which left at least 50 dead and scores more wounded.
Trump has proposed temporarily barring foreign Muslims from entering the country to protect against potential threats.
The suspect in the early Sunday shooting has been identified as an American citizen whose family was from Afghanistan.
